Official figures released on Wednesday showed that South Africa in March recorded a higher inflation rate with food prices reaching the highest year-on-year rise in more than a decade.
In a statement released by the country’s national statistics agency, StatsSA, inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages continued to rise and was up 14 percent on March last year.
According to the statistics agency, this is the largest annual increase since the 14.7% rise in March 2009.
Consumer inflation rose to 7.1 percent last month from 7.0 percent in February and 6.9 percent in January.
StatsSA said milk, eggs, cheese, sugar, fruit and vegetables were among the most affected food products.
The South African Reserve Bank, SARB, in March raised its interest rate by 0.5% point to 7.75 % in a bid to curb soaring costs.
